Documentation and E-Learning (Part 2) - Show, Don't Tell
For several years now, I've been writing poetry. The local poet who taught our class showed us a huge variety of poetic "forms": ABeCeDarius, Acrostic, Anaphora, Ars Poetica, Blank Verse, Crown of Sonnets, Eclogue, Haiku, Internal Rhyme, Nested Word, Ode, Pantoum, Rondelet, Sestina, Shape Verse, Triolet, Villanelle...just a few of the thousands of poetic forms out there. And the drumbeat mantra that helps to differentiate all of them from plain old ordinary prose is: "Show, Don't Tell."
The following short poem helps to illustrate the concept:
Fandango
(Inspired by the phrase "--a hat of wind"
from "The Death of the Hat" by Billy Collins.)
Autumn brings Earth
o the harvest dance,
her amber locks tossing
under a hat of wind.
Her olive-skinned fields
flowing into silk-stocking streams,
and wildflower tulle twisting
over twirling heels.
An indigo sash circling
her sunset neck,
and her star-flashed eyes
daring Winter to cut in.

If one simply told readers what the poem is saying, it'd be a bit of a yawn:
""It's autumn... yellow leaves toss in the breeze... fields are green...streams flow...wildflowers twist in the wind...it's sunset... stars appear in the evening sky...and winter is near."
But a poetic picture that shows the same thing using the animated image of Earth as a dancer helps readers savor the raw facts, internalize them, and perhaps even enjoy their delivery. All of these aid in remembering, which is key to successful training.
""Show, Don't Tell" also applies to user documentation.
When I arrived at SyberWorks a few years ago, the existing Web Author User Manual described the software's features and controls, but said little about how to use them to actually build online courses.
So I wrote a completely new manual that shows users-step-by-step-how to create online training from Word files through Web Author.
And our internal customer-support people started to use the new manual to train both new customers and themselves.
Some companies have stretched this "showing" idea as far as it can go...through something called "docs without words." Hewlett-Packard and IBM were among the first to create picture-book manuals that were mostly show with little tell.
I'm not sure that this would work in my SyberWorks software manuals. But I am noodling ways to use the idea to shorten them (and maybe even to inspire more users to crack 'em open).
And "Show, Don't Tell" applies just as well to e-Learning.
As you prepare to create any new training, first outline the raw facts you want students to learn. And instead of simply telling them those facts on course pages, think of interesting, creative ways to demonstrate what you want students to internalize...perhaps even (as in poetry) using as few words as possible. Active Images, Flash movies, and animated Web Demonstrations are all wonderful tools for doing this.
But you're the course developers...You can think of more!

If one simply told readers what the poem is saying, it'd be a bit of a yawn:
""It's autumn... yellow leaves toss in the breeze... fields are green...streams flow...wildflowers twist in the wind...it's sunset... stars appear in the evening sky...and winter is near."
But a poetic picture that shows the same thing using the animated image of Earth as a dancer helps readers savor the raw facts, internalize them, and perhaps even enjoy their delivery. All of these aid in remembering, which is key to successful training.

When I arrived at SyberWorks a few years ago, the existing Web Author User Manual described the software's features and controls, but said little about how to use them to actually build online courses.
So I wrote a completely new manual that shows users-step-by-step-how to create online training from Word files through Web Author.
And our internal customer-support people started to use the new manual to train both new customers and themselves.
Some companies have stretched this "showing" idea as far as it can go...through something called "docs without words." Hewlett-Packard and IBM were among the first to create picture-book manuals that were mostly show with little tell.
I'm not sure that this would work in my SyberWorks software manuals. But I am noodling ways to use the idea to shorten them (and maybe even to inspire more users to crack 'em open).
And "Show, Don't Tell" applies just as well to e-Learning.
As you prepare to create any new training, first outline the raw facts you want students to learn. And instead of simply telling them those facts on course pages, think of interesting, creative ways to demonstrate what you want students to internalize...perhaps even (as in poetry) using as few words as possible. Active Images, Flash movies, and animated Web Demonstrations are all wonderful tools for doing this.
But you're the course developers...You can think of more!

RFID in Libraries Guide
A technology that was originally developed for the military during World War II, and has now encompassed all walks of life by making its foray into retail, medical, education, automotives, fast food, travel industry, and so on, is RFID or Radio Frequency Identification.
RFID is basically one of the automatic identification systems like bar codes, smart cards, etc. which helps machines in identifying objects. It consists of a transponder or a tag which has an embedded integrated circuit and an antenna. The IC is encrypted with a unique electronic product code. The antenna allows the tag to receive and respond to radio frequency queries from an RFID transceiver. It thus, transmits the data stored in its IC to the receiver which in turn sends it to a central computer for processing.
New uses of RFID are being discovered every day. Using them in libraries is just one among them. Currently, approximately 120 million media and books in about 500 libraries worldwide are already attached with RFID labels, and this number is still progressing. With the introduction of RFID, the management of libraries is improving drastically. In libraries RFID plays a crucial role in checking the catalogues and allowing the customers to pass by card readers that automatically updates the computer system by synchronizing the ID information on patron's library card with the book and indicating that the book has been checked out. Thus, it ensures higher degree of accuracy in record keeping which is a very significant aspect of library management.
Moreover, it is expected that the new technology will help in reducing the costs and improve the tracking of library material as it moves in and out of the shelves. Thus, it will enable the library's staff to catch anyone who tries to take any material out from the library without their consent. Some of the latest RFID products designed specifically for libraries possess some powerful features such as providing real time information on returned and new items, fast sorting and return of popular items, providing self checkout of materials and allowing web based monitoring. In addition to this these systems can even notify the library staff by e-mail when a printer paper is low, and offer customers a choice of either a paper or e-mail receipt at checkout. RFID system will also meet the demand of complex IT and information research inquiries, such as tracing e-books and electronic journals and creating links to digital materials.
However, like any other new technology RFID has its own share of shortcomings. The most common of these drawbacks is its cost. Like most of the new technologies, RFID equipment such as RFID readers and tags are very expensive. Hence, it is financially impractical for the smaller and not so famous libraries to implement it. Moreover, RFID has some security issues attached to it as it violates citizen's privacy by tracking them and creating a database of their habits and activities.
However, despite all these drawbacks RFID is a very helpful tool for the libraries to streamline their management.

Go into Zone Alarm and hit the tab listed below. Listed next to the tab are the settings I use. They're just my recommendations.

Ubuntu Introduction Guide For First Time Users
So, you are reading this because probably you have installed ubuntu right and now you need to know about the system and how it works and how can you optimize the system for better efficiency, for better look and how can you customize it like you can do it in windows! Well, look no further, you can get all those tips right here! Here is a "Beginners guide to ubuntu tips and optimization".
So, lets learn a few things about ubuntu, that you might want to know as a first time user.
First boot:
When you for the first time boot the ubuntu system, what you see is a boot flash screen which is called a USplash and it covers up what is going on in the background when linux is booting. This screen is introduced so that the users who arent interested in what actually happens in the background, dont really see it.
First Login Screen:
On the right side of the login screen, you will notice the name of the computer, the date and the current time. On the left side there are some very useful options, like reboot, shutdown, suspend, hibernate, change session etc. Ok, it's time for you to type in your username and password (hit enter after each one). Immediately after you've typed your username and password, you'll notice a splash screen that shows what programs are loading and in a few seconds the splash screen disappears and the Ubuntu desktop appears. That's the Ubuntu desktop!
Gnome Desktop:
The desktop environment that ubuntu uses is the GNome desktop! If you have a DHCP based network connection (automatic IP address) then you are connected to the Internet as Ubuntu configures DHCP connections automatically and you will notice a notification message in the right-upper part of the screen that says "Software updates available". Click on the new orange icon (from where the notification message appeared) and a window will appear on the left side of the screen. This window will start to search for updates. Click the Install Updates button, when the search is complete, to install the available updates on your system. Ohh, what's this? It asks for a password, because this is an administrative task and it's safer this way; just type your password and hit enter. This program is called Update Manager and you can always find it under System -> Administration menu, but it will always appear when there are new updates. Also, you will notice another notification message that will ask if you want to install proprietary drivers for your graphics card. Just click the Enable option and it will start to download and install the necessary drivers.
Panels and Applets:
et's learn a few things about the desktop. First things first, you should know that this desktop is called GNOME; as you can see, it's a little different than Windows, as it has two Panels: one at the bottom and one at the top. But what's cool about this desktop is that you can always configure it however you want, but we'll talk about this a little bit later. Both panels have the same options and configurations.
The bottom panel has the Show Desktop button on the left side; in the middle you will see all the current opened windows and on the right you'll see a trash icon and the Workspace Switcher. Now this is something you didn't have in Windows (at least not as default), as the Workspace Switcher allows you to have multiple desktops. How does it work? Very simple: on the actual desktop, you have a window (or more) and if you click on the second square (default there are only two desktops, but you can set up to 36 desktops) the window(s) will disappear. Why? Because they are on the first desktop (you can even see them in the first square), and if you click the first square the window(s) will appear again. On the second (empty) desktop you can have other window(s). Come on, try it yourself to see how it works!

It contains on the left side the Main Menu from where you can access all the applications, different system locations (home folder, network places etc) and the system configuration tools.
