If booting up your computer takes a lifetime to complete, you really need to do something about it. Though it doesn't give you a big cut off on boot time, still a few seconds can still make a big difference on your computing experience.
One way to speed up boot time on and Vista is by defragging. The trick is simple, the closer the files are, the easier for your hard drive to read them. Therefore takes less time to finish the booting process. You can also change some BIOS setting. Just take note that this is a complicated task so you better ask someone to do this in case the interface looks strange to you.
The first thing Windows XP or Vista does before starting is running the BIOS and as it boots it runs a POST or power on self-test. This diagnostic ensures that all the hardware are working properly. Setting a quick POST, if this option is available on BIOS, can cut few second of the boot time. Next is to set the hard drive as your main boot device. Disable or set on secondary other booting options like CD, floppy,USB, or secondary storage device. And if the Boot Delay is available, turn it off.
Another way to speed up boot time for Windows XP and Vista is to clean the registry. But be careful in choosing a registry cleaner because some, if not most, bring more problems than help. And don't jump in to purchasing one because there are a lot of freewares available on the net. Just make sure you get them from a reliable website so you don't get yourself into more trouble by installing a malware instead.
